A Combination of Two Vocal Luminaries
Among the more than forty albums Salena Jones has produced over a period of some forty years, I love this one best, for the simple reason that her voice and artistic maturity are at their tip-top prime.
Joan Elizabeth Shaw is the original name of this dazzling artist. She started singing at the age of fifteen, at which time she was a fan of the great jazz singer Sarah Vaughan, and idolized the famous opera singer Lena Horne. Joan aspired to create her own style, combining the artistry of both Sarah and Lena; she named herself “Salena,” and modified Joan to Jones. And a great singer was born!
Apart from her gifted voice and natural singing style, Salena Jones impresses me most with the feeling she puts into every song she sings. That emotion echoes in my mind long after the song ends.
This album, originally recorded in analog, is now re-mastered with the superior K2 HD format, reviving all the glories of Salena’s voice; I have compared this album with the LP, and immensely prefer it. Her rendition of these treasured songs will appeal to music lovers and audiophiles alike.
