I Have Requests
I consider We Get Requests one of my collection’s finest jazz productions of the Golden Age period. Three master musicians in their prime, playing so beautifully, producing such a musical sound….
Several editions of this recording have been released; all are good. However, with the advent of digital technology, we can now even more accurately approach the original, so-called “analog sound,” and in my view, sometimes even surpass the old format in qualities such as transparency, detailed timbre, and transience.
With this production, crafted at JVC’s Flair Studios in Tokyo, the mastering engineer and I did our best to keep the musical integrity of the original sound, while attempting to “perfect” the soundscaping with an even sunnier presentation. The result is that during playback I feel more emotional and involved with the music.
I love the new presentation – however, that is my subjective view. I hope discerning audiophiles will lend me their ears and provide me their honest feedback.
You may be interested to know that the music on this album was recorded on three different days. If you have “super ears,” you will find that the three batches of songs are slightly different in tonality! Let me know which sounds best to your ears; I like Batch Two, but I want to compare my notes with yours. You can find the batch information on the Production Data page.
The other interesting thing about this recording is that this is Peterson’s last in his fourteen-year association with Verve and probably may be the best amongst his numerous recordings with this label.
This album marks the beginning of a new FIM series: the re-mastering of selected Verve recordings. If you know of treasured rare jewels from the Verve recording vault that you would like me to revive, please send me an e-mail so that I may explore their availability.
Meanwhile, sit back and have a wonderful evening with the masterful Oscar, Ray, and Ed.
Yours truly,
Winston Ma
